What is compounding?
Pharmaceutical compounding is the method of preparing medications
to meet each physician's and patient's unique needs. The physician first prescribes the medication, then the pharmacist takes the necessary ingredients, compounds them, and dispenses the medicine to the patient in a delivery system that best fits the patients needs. The art of pharmaceutical compounding allows patients to receive the personalized care they deserve.
Why compound?Compounding has been around since the origin of pharmacy. There are many good reasons why we still practice it today! Some patients, for example, are allergic to certain preservatives and dyes used in many prescribed drugs while others are sensitive to the standard drug strengths. Compounding allows us to eliminate offensive ingredients in the medication and to adjust the strength to meet the specific needs of our patients. All this is done through consultation with the patient and his/her physician.
Compounding also allows us to adjust the delivery system to best suit the patients needs. Someone who has a hard time swallowing capsules can have their medication prepared in suspension form. In the case of children the medication might be prepared in the form of a lollipop. We can also add flavorings to make the medication more palatable.
Some of the other unique delivery systems available are suppositories, metered nasal sprays, lip balms, lozenges, topical ointments, and pre-filled straws which are very useful for travel or school applications. Should you, as a patient, require multiple medications, it may be possible to combine them into a single dosage form to decrease the number of dosages needed.
